With so many people looking for work or looking for a change today it’s no wonder that home based jobs are getting a lot more attention in recent months. There are many reasons that this is an appealing option for those who are tired of commutes, office politics, and live in constant fear of cutbacks, downsizing, and companies going under.
Before you take the plunge it’s a good idea to examine some of the benefits and possible drawbacks of a job working at home.
Pros of Working from Home
* Work in your “jammies”. Many professionals do not realize the amount of money that goes into obtaining and maintaining a professional wardrobe. Home based jobs eliminate the need for a huge wardrobe of clothes for different professional occasions. It will also save on the required weekly dry cleaning that goes into maintaining and caring for that wardrobe.
* Eliminate the long commute. How many hours of the day are generally lost in the commute from home to the babysitters, daycare center, etc. to work and then back at the end of the day? How much are those hours worth to you and your family? Don’t simply measure the time that is lost each day by commuting but also count the cost in gas and more frequent maintenance needed on the car in the form of oil changes, new tires, and general wear and tear.
* Job satisfaction. It’s amazing how much job dissatisfaction is the direct result of office politics. Many people find that working alone and in the absence of the “politicking” is a much more peaceful way to work.
Cons of Working from Home
* You are still working for someone else. This isn’t the same as owning your own business. You’re still on someone else’s time clock. This means that they call the shots. You’re working their office hours, meeting their deadlines, and paid what they decide your work is worth.
* Loneliness. Some people seriously dislike their own company. For a few days or even a few weeks it’s great. Over the long haul some people just aren’t designed for the type of solitude that home based jobs require.
* No oversight. While some people are excellent at motivating themselves to get the job done and meet deadlines other people need constant oversight. This is freely available in most work places but employees who work from home often fly under the radar until it’s too late. If you are good at keeping yourself motivated, on target, and on task this should be no problem. If you need a little incentive or encouragement to get the ball rolling this might not be the best choice for you.

Have you ever thought of owning your own business, but never imagined what it might be. Have you ever considered a franchise?  I am not talking about McDonald’s or a Starbucks, but something out of your own home.

To start, a franchise is a business system whereby the company headquarters (Franchisor) grants independent operators (Franchisees) the right to sell and distribute its products and services along with its trademarks.

As more people opt to work from home, home-based franchises have grown in number in recent years, offering a wide variety of interesting businesses that can be operated from home.  A home-based franchise offers several advantages such as:

  • Lower cost to entry compared to traditional franchises
  • Home-based franchises often have lower franchise fees
  • Home-based franchises allow you to save on the overhead costs of running a storefront.
  • Home-based franchises give you lifestyle benefits by allowing you to work from home while taking care of your family
  • No commuting to work, thereby saving on gas
  • Flexible working hours

You can find a franchise in almost every field including child care to automotive, healthcare to pet care, real estate to computer services.  The web has thousands upon thousands of franchises for you to look at and weigh your options. PowerHomeBiz  has many franchised opportunities outlined in detail. Your local book store also has many magazines that go into great detail about the most successful and most affordable home businesses to get into.

Before you begin, you want to do your research carefully. Due to the initial cost of a home based franchise, from $250 to $75,000, you want to make sure you pick the right one. Pick a product or service that you are familiar with, something that parallels a hobby you enjoy. If you like to sew, look into a sewing franchise, if you like outdoors, look at a lawn care or a landscaping franchise. Next, decide how much you want to spend. The more familiar a franchise names is usually means a bigger franchise fee, but usually bigger profits as well. Your overhead will be low because you can work from home and do not need a brick and mortar facility with offices, chairs and telephone lines. You will still need a lawyer and an accountant.

As with all well planned businesses, you must create a well thought out business plan that details what the franchise parent company can do for you in terms of training and advertising, yearly costs and advertising expenses, an exit strategy for when your contract comes do, know who your customer base is and know who your competitors are. Outlining these in your business plan will help you stay on track when the economy becomes tougher to compete in.

The downfall of franchising is that if the parent company suffers, all those owning a franchise also suffers. There is no guarantee of success because you are part of a franchise and there is no control of how many franchises there can be within a given area.  With that said, millions of franchises operate profitably with no issues.

Whether you are a retiree, a stay-at-home mom taking care of the kids, or simply someone who is tired of working for corporate, there are a number of franchises that you can do from home and be successful while doing something you enjoy. Just take the first step and tell yourself that you are going to do it!

This was written by the CBC recently …

“According to the Angus Reid poll, 35 per cent of those who want their own business will follow through within two years.

The survey was conducted on behalf of Intuit, a company that produces financial software.

The main reason so many Canadians dream of running their own business is having greater control over their own destiny, according to the survey.

Other reasons include not having to work for someone else, and being able to make more money than working on a salary.

Sixty-five per cent of those who want to be an entrepreneur believe it’s easy to come up with a business idea, while 55 per cent said it would be easy to market their plan.

Getting financing was the biggest obstacle, with 68 per cent saying it’s too difficult to get a loan and 46 per cent complaining about their own lack of money.

The survey was conducted in the final week of February and included 1,010 randomly selected Canadian adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.08 per cent 19 times out of 20.”
